We speak to ASH about the phenomenal debut...
Hey ASH! Nice to chat with you.
Thanks so much for having me!
How does it feel to have your debut single, off of your debut EP out in the world?
It honestly just feels so freeing. This track was the first song I ever wrote and produced over four years ago so I’ve been working on it and waiting to share my music for a long time. Now that I’ve checked that box I can also be more excited about everything that’s to come after it!
As an artist who is involved in every aspect of your music, from production to performance, what part of the process do you find most rewarding?
I really can’t pick a specific aspect that’s most rewarding. I think what I find most satisfying about making music is bringing all these elements together cohesively, so each aspect is equally crucial to how I envision the final product.
Who are the main influences for your alternative R&B sound?
Some of my biggest influences are FKA twigs, Sade, and Frank Ocean. These artists are characterized by their delicate yet soulful sound and emotionally poetic lyricism, and they’ve been rich inspirations to me.
If you could create a playlist with three of your songs and three songs from your biggest influences, what would you pick?
Three of my songs: Infatuated, Blue Interlude, These Clouds
Three songs from my influences: careless (FKA twigs), Lovers Rock (Sade), Sierra Leone (Frank Ocean)
When you're not making music, what do you love to do to unwind and stay inspired as a band? Any favorite hobbies or guilty pleasures?
I’m very much a homebody so when I’m not working on music, I really enjoy just cooking for friends and family. It’s so therapeutic to me and is something I get to look forward to everyday. That and just trying to be out in nature as much as possible are what keep me going outside of music.
Looking back at your journey from starting out learning to produce to releasing your debut project, what’s been the most unexpected lesson or piece of advice that’s stuck with you?
The most unexpected lesson has been that believing in my art is just as important as working hard on the art being good. I learned that backing myself wholeheartedly isn’t being unrealistic, but is actually the only way I can be successful.
It was so good to talk to you, ASH!
